Dr. Mark Wax is a Professor in the Departments of Otolaryngology/Oral Maxillofacial surgery. He is the Residency Program Director and Director of Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at OHSU. Dr Wax has trained 26 fellows to date. His fellows have populated multiple academic institutions and range from division chairs to chairman.
Dr. Wax has been an active member of the American Head and Neck Society where he was treasurer for 6 years and then president. He was an active member of the executive group for almost a decade. He has been extremely active in the AAOHNS. These activities included a stint as the coordinator for education where he directed the educational activities of the foundation. His term as the coordinator for meetings, he who arranges and manages the annual meeting, which is one of the largest gatherings of Otolaryngologists in the world ended with a pivot from a live to a virtual format.. His dedication to teaching culminated in his election as president of the otolaryngology program directors organization where he served on its executive council for many years.
Dr. Wax’s focus and interest have been on reconstruction after major head and neck oncologic ablation with a view to maximizing rehabilitation. With over 280 articles in the peer review literature he has expanded the reach of free tissue transfer in reconstruction and the rehabilitation of patients with significant defects in the head and neck. Collaboration with the Oral Maxillofacial department has led to improved dental rehabilitation with reconstruction of the bony skeleton.
On a personal level Mark has been married to his wife Roberta for 35 years and they reside in Portland Oregon. His 2 children, Blair currently resides in Washington DC. His daughter Stephanie is a nurse at OHSU. He is a proud grandfather!!!!. He enjoys skiing, running, climbing, and traveling.
