Evaluation of Virtual Surgical Planning Workshop for Complex Bony Reconstruction

Introduction: Virtual surgical planning (VSP) is becoming increasingly popular for complex bony reconstructions in the head and neck region. This study evaluates the educational benefits of case-based learning and expert panels for VSP in complex midface and mandibular reconstruction during a large educational conference.

Methods: We assessed pre- and post-simulation scores across four VSP planning categories: overall confidence, resection planning, reconstructive planning, and plate specification for midface and mandibular reconstruction. Additionally, we categorized participants by training level and prior VSP experience to evaluate how these factors influence the benefits of the course.

Results: A total of 46 participants completed both pre- and post-simulation surveys. Post-simulation scores significantly increased across all four categories for midface and mandibular VSP training sessions compared to pre-simulation scores. Specifically for mandibular planning, overall confidence increased by 1.0 (CI 0.52 to 1.48, p = 0.0003), resection planning competency by 0.71 (CI 0.19 to 1.24, p = 0.01), reconstruction planning competency by 1.07 (CI 0.62 to 1.53, p < 0.0001), and plate specification competency by 1.14 (CI 0.45 to 1.84, p = 0.0028). For midface planning, overall confidence increased by 0.55 (CI 0.22 to 0.88, p = 0.0022), resection planning competency by 0.45 (CI 0.15 to 0.75, p = 0.0052), reconstruction planning competency by 0.40 (CI 0.10 to 0.70, p = 0.01), and plate specification competency by 0.30 (CI 0.06 to 0.54, p = 0.02). Our data further revealed that participants with extensive VSP experience had diminished educational benefits compared to those with less experience .

Conclusions: Case-based learning and expert panels serve as effective educational tools for implementing virtual surgical planning. This learning strategy particularly benefits participants beginning to incorporate VSP into their practice. Future initiatives should aim to boost participation among interested trainees as well as identify novel ways to confer educational benefits for experienced practitioners
