PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Composite defects of the mandible may be a result of oncologic ablation, trauma, or other benign disease processes. This region is fundamental to many physiologic processes that make life possible as well as pleasant. When these areas undergo an ablative process, the defect needs to be reconstructed to address cosmesis, oronasal separation, functional restoration of swallowing and finally complete orodental rehabilitation. Addressing all of these concerns is a complex issue. The ability to 3 dimensionally reconstruct the mandible can be difficult and time-consuming. The advent of computer-assisted design processes that will allow one to plan the ablative portion as well as design templates for osteotomies and bony reconstruction with a patien t specific plate, have markedly decreased the time needed for reconstruction as well as improved the contour.
In this simulation presentation we will utilize an online computer module with an actual planning session for a simple lateral mandibular defect, a complex complete Hemi mandibular defect including the condyle, and an angle to angle defect. The online interactive modeling will allow for audience participation and interaction at all stages of the session. Finally, each presenter will utilize preoperative intraoperative and postoperative photo documentation to complement the planning session. The majority of the session will deal with online simulation in a real-life scenario. Audience participation will be interactive and real time.

Learning Objectives:

Demonstrate understanding of the role of computer simulation in the planning for oncologic ablation that includes mandibulectomy.
Demonstrate understanding of the role of computer simulation and planning for mandibular reconstruction.
Attendees will be able to utilize computer online simulation for reconstruction in their particular practice setting.
