Effective Management of Auricular Hematoma: Hands-On Experience with the Experts

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Auricular hematoma is a common otolaryngologic concern encountered in both outpatient clinics and emergency departments. While diagnosis is typically straightforward, improper management can lead to significant complications, including infection, deformity, and cauliflower ear. Effective treatment requires precise surgical drainage, appropriate dressing techniques, and the ability to anticipate and address potential complications. This session addresses this educational gap through an interactive, case-based format and a high-fidelity surgical simulation. Participants will gain hands-on experience performing auricular hematoma incision and drainage, applying bolster dressings and/or mattress sutures, and receiving expert feedback. Faculty will demonstrate diverse management approaches and share strategies for complication prevention and mitigation. The use of 3D-printed, single-use simulation task trainers paired with actual surgical instruments and dressings offers a highly realistic procedural experience. To further refine the curriculum and materials, participants will be surveyed on the fidelity and effectiveness of the simulation and teaching tools. This feedback will guide the development of future educational programs, ensuring continuous improvement in addressing this essential skill set for otolaryngology practice

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Perform effective incision and drainage of auricular hematoma.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate various surgical strategies to prevent re-accumulation of hematoma (bolster dressings, mattress sutures, etc.).

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Recognize complications of auricular hematoma and develop management plans thereof.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Auricular hematoma was previously identified as an educational practice gap in FPRS by the AAO-HNSF Program and Educational committees. We have developed a high-fidelity, 3D printed simulator and curriculum that addresses this gap. The Simulation Committee supports this submission.
