PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sialography through salivary duct cannulation with contrast infusion has been termed “obsolete”, “technically difficult”, and “invasive”. Ultrasound, sialendoscopy, CT imaging and MRI sialography have replaced infusion sialography in many practices. This panel will identify and potentially reconcile differences of opinion addressing the utility of contemporary infusion sialography as it is used for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The moderator - with experience performing over 600 sialograms - will introduce the technique and direct case discussions among the panelists to identify management of salivary disorders both with and without use of sialography.

The goal of this panel is to present the procedure, indications, and limitations to infusion sialography for those Otolaryngologists who do not employ the procedure to confirm or refute its utility. A case-based presentation highlighting management with sialography will direct discussion regarding the panelists approach to management without sialography.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand the utility of, shortcomings to, and indications for infusion sialography in the management of salivary gland disorders.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the comparative advantages of different imaging techniques for salivary disorders – including sialendoscopy, MR sialography and contrast enhanced ultrasound.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Identify different approaches to management of salivary gland disorders.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Many Otolaryngologists have had limited exposure to contemporary infusion sialography. The information provided may lead some to adopt the procedure and others to understand the utility in referring to institutions that perform the procedure.
