Advancements and Challenges in Treating Sinonasal Malignancies: Japanese and Global Perspectives

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sinonasal malignancies are rare tumors comprising 3-5% of all head and neck neoplasms. Despite significant advances in treatment methodologies, including sophisticated endoscopic techniques and improved adjuvant therapies, the outcomes for sinonasal tumors have remained relatively stable compared to the notable improvements seen in other head and neck cancers over the past decade. This persistence is largely due to the extreme rarity of these tumors, resulting in a lack of standardized, evidence-based treatment strategies. Additionally, many clinical trials evaluating therapies for head and neck cancers often exclude sinonasal malignancies, leading to gaps in robust data and treatment protocols.

In this international symposium, a panel of Japanese and American experts in oncology and rhinology will discuss significant advances and ongoing challenges in the treatment of sinonasal malignancies:

1. Prof. Hanazawa and his team have developed a novel treatment for olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) that combines endoscopic endonasal surgery with carbon-ion radiotherapy.

2. Asso. Prof. Edward Kuan played a pivotal role in publishing the International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Sinonasal Tumors (ICSNT). He will summarize current evidence and controversies in sinonasal malignancies using ICSNT data and clinical insights.

3. Ass. Prof. Ariizumi and his team conducted a multi-institutional study involving 10 Japanese institutions aimed at standardizing endoscopic skull base surgery for sinonasal malignant tumors.

4. Ass. Prof. Takeda and his team utilize en-bloc resection for endoscopic tumor removal, employing precise tumor margin control in collaboration with pathology. His session will feature data from over 60 ONB patients, showcasing their approach.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Participants will articulate the latest evidence and controversies surrounding malignant sinonasal tumors, enhancing their ability to evaluate treatment approaches and engage in informed clinical discussions.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Attendees will gain insights into the current status and challenges of endoscopic nasal surgery for sinonasal tumors, particularly olfactory neuroblastoma, improving their treatment strategies, surgical techniques, and patient outcomes.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Participants will learn about the innovative combination of endoscopic surgery and carbon-ion therapy for olfactory neuroblastoma, evaluating its effectiveness for potential application in their clinical practice.
