PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The otolaryngologist is often the first and last stop for many common facial injuries – from nasal fractures to dog bites. In today’s resource limited healthcare environment, a referral to a sub-specialist may not be feasible or readily available. This panel will present the management of several common facial injuries (nasal bone fracture, nasal septum fracture, midfacial fracture, facial laceration repair, facial bite management). Using an evidence-based approach, this panel will present the initial management of these injuries – including non-surgical topical wound dressings, in-office repair options and indications for treatment in the operating room. The subsequent follow-up and scar management (scar revision, steroid injections, facial resurfacing) will also be discussed.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Identify the critical aspects of facial laceration management.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Describe several pearls to improving outcomes with nasal bone, nasal septum and midfacial fracture treatment.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Explain the pros and cons of dermabrasion, chemical peel and laser resurfacing for hypertrophic scar management.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: This panel is sponsored by the Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Education Committee. Facial trauma is a core component of the clinical training and practice of the otolaryngologist.

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : In today’s resource limited environment, a referral to a facial plastic surgeon may not be feasible or possible. The comprehensive otolaryngologist who is treating other chronic sinonasal issues may be the best choice to care for a patient's facial trauma injuries.
