PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Oral cavity carcinoma is the commonest of all head and neck carcinomas in Indian subcontinent. This can be attributed to habits of smokeless tobacco in significant number of patients. Various carcinogenic compounds and their mechanisms including cellular and DNA level changes have been described. There has been a significant change in recent past in the management protocols of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) and oral cavity carcinoma. Newer techniques of diagnosis and surgery have been invented such as narrow band imaging, liquid biopsy, minimally invasive surgery, micro vascular reconstruction and targeted/immune therapies. The role of integrative medicine has also been explored for OPMD and oral cavity carcinoma. The biggest achievement for a surgeon is to prevent recurrent or residual disease. Understanding current evidence based management strategies will help head and neck surgeons to provide quality care to the patients for optimum results in form of improved quality of life and survival.

Learning Objectives:

  1. To demonstrate knowledge and efficiency in the latest evidence -based approaches for the management of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD's) and oral cavity carcinoma in the Indian subcontinent.
  2. To analyse region-specific challenges, including delayed diagnosis, access to healthcare, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on treatment outcomes and to propose feasible solutions.
  3. To integrate recent research findings into their clinical practice and identify gaps in current management protocols to contribute to future research and policy improvements, especially in various surgical techniques and adjuvant and neoadjuvant therapies.
