PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This panel will provide an interactive case-based discussion on the otolaryngologic management of hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism. We will highlight key considerations in the clinical evaluation of hypercalcemia in patients presenting to the otolaryngologist with a focus on surgical patient selection to optimize patient outcomes. We will also review surgical considerations for a broad range of hyperparathyroidism cases and discuss preoperative imaging modalities, surgical approaches and the application of nascent near-infrared autofluorescence technology. This session is designed to improve the otolaryngologist’s confidence in treating patients with hyperparathyroidism.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand the differential diagnosis and work-up of hypercalcemia for patients presenting to the otolaryngologist-head and neck surgeon with a goal of identifying appropriate surgical candidates.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Appreciate the nuances of successful surgery for a variety of hyperparathyroidism cases.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Demonstrate an understanding of the application of near-infrared technology for parathyroid gland identification in parathyroid surgery.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The surgical management of hyperparathyroidism can be fraught and success depends on comprehensive and systematic preoperative evaluation in order to identify appropriate surgical candidates as well as meticulous surgical planning and technique

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : This case-based interactive panel session is designed to improve the otolaryngologist’s confidence in evaluating and treating hyperparathyroidism and to address an identified gap in practice by the Program Committee. We have geographic and practice model diversity in our presenters.
