PGY-1 Preliminary General Surgery Resident

Bianca V. Bonafont Reyes, MD, is a first-year preliminary general surgery resident at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. With a strong interest in otolaryngology and surgical innovation, Dr. Bonafont is actively engaged in clinical research aimed at improving patient outcomes in head and neck surgery.
As a medical student at the University of Puerto Rico, she contributed to projects focused on head and neck surgical outcomes and patient quality of life, reflecting her dedication to research and medical education. Her current research, which will be presented at this conference, explores whether the thyroid can be spared in patients with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma undergoing total laryngectomy. The study evaluates risk stratification protocols that may help minimize postoperative complications in patients at low risk of thyroid involvement.
Dr. Bonafont is committed to a career that integrates clinical excellence, research, and education. As a resident, she is building a strong foundation in general surgery while actively pursuing collaborative opportunities within the field of otolaryngology and contributing to the academic community.
