CAPT Randy Ashman enlisted in 1989 and served two years as a Hospital Corpsman in the US Naval Reserves before being selected to the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps in 1991, where he received a Bachelor of Science (Magna Cum Laude) in Nursing from Seattle University in 1996. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an active-duty Ensign.
In 2003 he was selected for the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program, graduating from Georgetown University with a Master of Science (Magna Cum Laude) in 2006.
In 2015 he obtained a Doctoral of Nursing Practice Degree (Magna Cum Laude) from the University of Alabama. His project won the 2015 Department of Defense Quality Patient Safety Award.
During his nearly 30-year career, he served at Naval Medical Center San Diego; Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan; Naval Hospital Okinawa, Japan, US Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Navy Medicine Readiness & Training Command Lemoore. He also deployed with Fleet Surgical Team One on USS Peleliu (LHA-5) and USS Makin Island (LHD-8); deployed to NATO Role Three Multinational Medical Unit in Kandahar Afghanistan, deployed on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71) in 2020, and USNS Mercy (T-AH 19) in support of Pacific Partnership 2024 and humanitarian and surgical aid to the countries of Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Palau, and Chuuk, Micronesia.
He has served in various roles including Staff Nurse Anesthetist, Anesthesia Department Head, Assistant Director for Nursing Services, Co-Chair of the Nursing Executive Committee, and acting Director of Nursing Services/Senior Nurse Executive.
CAPT Ashman has published two peer-reviewed articles. His personal military awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (5 awards), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), and various service and deployment awards.
He has been married to his wife, Imelda, for 28 years, and has one son, Evan, who is 20 years old.
