Dr. Mark Prince, MD, FRCS(C), FACS is the Charles Krause Professor and Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-HNS at the University of Michigan. He earned his medical degree at Dalhousie University Medical School in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a medical officer, receiving specialized training in hyperbaric and diving medicine. Dr. Prince returned to Dalhousie University and completed a residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery, followed by a two-year fellowship in advanced head and neck oncology and microvascular reconstructive surgery at the University of Michigan.
He was Residency Program Director and Assistant Professor in Otolareyngology at Dalhousie Univeiristy until he returned to the University of Michigan in 2000. Since joining the faculty of the Department of Otolaryngology-HNS at the University of Michigan Dr Prince has been actively involved in resident and medical student education. He served as the department's Residency Program Director till 2016 and as the Associate Chair for Education from 2009 to 2016. In 2016 Dr. Prince was appointed interim Chair and then in 2018 as the Charles Krause Professor and Chair of Otolaryngology-HNS at the University of Michigan. Dr. Prince was appointed Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education from 2015 to 2018.
Dr. Prince’s research laboratory published the first report of the identification of cancer stem cells in head and neck squamous cell cancer and continues to conduct research in this exciting field. This work led to a number of discoveries including an anti-cancer vaccine developed to target cancer stem cells.
He remains an active clinician focusing on head and neck cancer and microvascular surgery and comprehensive otolaryngology, providing care at the University of Michigan and the Ann Arbor Veteran’s Administration Medical Center.
