Dr Shamit Chopra completed his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery) and MS (Master
of Surgery) in Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery from Maulana Azad Medical College and
associated hospitals, New Delhi, consistently ranked among the top three medical schools in India. He
had a number of medical school honors during his education and training, notably finishing first in the
University of Delhi (the number one ranked university in India) in his MS examinations.
He then completed a clinical observership in the Head and Neck Unit of the Department of Surgical
Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital, India. He subsequently
obtained ECFMG certification and then completed a one-and-a-half year AHNS fellowship and tenure as
Visiting Assistant Professor in Head, Neck and Skull Base Surgery at the University of California, Davis
Medical Center. He then completed another two year AHNS fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic &
Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery at Wayne State University/ Karmanos
Cancer Institute at Michigan.
He joined Patel Hospital, Jalandhar, India in July 2010, and is now Chair of the Department of Head and
Neck Surgery and the Head and Neck MDT leader at the hospital, which manages over 1000 new cancer patients annually. He
has over 30 abstracts and 95 presentations at regional/national/international meetings to his credit.
He is the current Chairman of the Oncology Committee affiliated to the State Chapter of the
Indian Medical Association. He is also a member of the Executive Committee of the Foundation for Head
and Neck Oncology.
Dr Chopra’s areas of special interest include oral cancer, thyroid cancer, microvascular reconstruction,
CO2 laser surgery, rehabilitative strategies and outcomes research.
