PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sudden sensorineural hearing loss is a frightening experience for the patient and a difficult one to manage for the physician. Standard of care for assessment and treatment varies around the world. How much of SSNHL is idiopathic, and how to identify the causative factors, also varies. Because of well-read Clinical Practice Guidelines (including from AAO-HNS), care is more systematic and research has targeted this condition. This panel will cover cost-effective and patient-centric workup, discuss interventions that are and are not effective, and review post-intervention monitoring and hearing, balance, and tinnitus care.Techniques for interventions such as intratympanic application of steroids, hyperbaric oxygen treatment, etc. will be detailed. The panel is geared to trainees, practicing general (comprehensive) otolaryngologists, physician extenders in ENT, audiologists, and otologists/neurotologists. Ample time for audience participation will be included. Speakers are experts and leaders in SSNHL in their respective countries and worldwide.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: recognize the various possible causes of idiopathic and non-idiopathic SSNHL

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: interpret the data to understand appropriate testing and its timing for patients presenting with SSNHL

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: compare the outcomes of various interventions in order to better treat and counsel patients with SSNHL

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: SSNHL has been addressed by AAO-HNS and others with CPGs but the data is evolving and much more is known now than before. Prior Academy presentations on SSNHL had audiences of over 500. We believe that level of interest continues and this panel fills a needed knowledge gap for meeting attendees.

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : Patients with SSNHL present to PCPs, ERs, and comprehensive otolaryngologists first. There is a clear advantage to correct, timely treatment and workup. In practice, we see this continuing to be a practice gap. Targeting this panel to general ENTs allows for the greatest impact on patient care.
