Introduction: In a 2011 AAO-HNS survey, 85% of otolaryngologists reported participating in fewer than one case of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) trauma per month, highlighting the need for facial trauma-related education (McCusker and Schmalbach, 2011). This study aims to evaluate the educational value of a live, hands-on plating course for the midface and mandible at a large ENT national conference setting.

Methods: We assessed pre- and post-simulation scores across seven categories for mandible plating (overall confidence, competency in IMF screws and MMF usage, Champy plate usage competency, symphysis plating confidence, parasymphysis plating confidence, and subcondylar plating confidence) and six categories for midface plating (overall confidence, competency in IMF screws and MMF usage, orbital fracture plating confidence, Lefort I fracture plating confidence, and ZMC fracture plating confidence).

Results: A total of 39 participants completed both pre- and post-simulation surveys. Post-simulation scores significantly increased across all seven categories for mandible plating for resdients/fellows. Specifically overall confidence increased by 1.09 (CI 0.73 to 1.44, p < 0.0001), IMF competency by 1.18 (CI 0.73 to 1.64, p < 0.0001), MMF competency by 2.0 (CI 1.47 to 2.53, p < 0.0001), champy plate competency by 1.46 (CI 1.12 to 1.79, p < 0.0001), symphysis plating competency by 0.34 to 1.47 (CI 0.35 to 1.47, p = 0.0039), parasymphysis plating competency by 0.91 (CI 0.47 to 1.35, p = 0.0006), and subcondylar plating competency by 1.0 (CI 0.52 to 1.48, p = 0.0006). Post-simulation scores significantly increased across all six categories for midface plating compared to pre-simulation scores.

Conclusions: The live hands-on plating course serves as an effective educational tool for enhancing CMF trauma skills among otolaryngologists. This learning modality particularly benefits trainees and participants with limited CMF trauma experience. Future initiatives should aim to boost participation among interested trainees as well as identify novel ways to confer educational benefits for experienced practitioners
