Laryngeal Manifestations of Autoimmune Disease: Identifying the Subtle Signs for Improved Patient Outcomes

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This panel presentation, lead by fellowship trained laryngologists, will take the learner through several case-based modules to review the common presentations, diagnostic tools, and treatment options for autoimmune mediated laryngeal disease. Emphasis will be placed on subtle clinical and exam findings to encourage early identification. Tips for collaborating with rheumatology and pathology on challenges cases will be presented. Navigating management between academic setting, private practice, and hospital employed practice will be introduced. Didactic presentation along with panelist Q&A will provide a variety of educational formats. Delay in diagnosis and subsequent sequela will be discussed. Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, sarcoidosis, granulomatosis with polyangiits, IgG4, amyloidosis, relapsing polychonditis, and pemphigus will be presented using HD video and images. Audience response system will be utilized to encourage participation.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Interpret signs on laryngoscopy and videostroboscopy that are pathognomonic for autoimmune manifestations of the larynx.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Examine the importance of proper selection of biopsy medium, tissue sampling and timing, and collaboration with pathology to aid in correct diagnosis.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Review recommendations for management of common autoimmune manifestations of the larynx including surgical intervention, in-office procedures, steroids, immunotherapy, and interdisciplinary care with rheumatology.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Autoimmune disorders can present in the larynx and delay in identification can lead to significant morbidity. Continuing education using images/videos on how to interpret autoimmune signs on laryngoscopy and tips/peals on how to manage is needed.
