Tackling the Top Two Benign Sinonasal Tumors in Your Practice

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: After comprehensive otolaryngology training, many surgeons feel comfortable surgically addressing typical chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal obstruction complaints. However, benign sinus and nasal tumors will also present to these physicians in their practices, and some may not have as much experience in the diagnosis and management of these pathologies. The goal of this presentation is to educate general otolaryngologists, as well as trainees looking at sub-specializing in rhinology, a practical guide to appropriate diagnosis and surgical management of the top two benign sinonasal tumors they will see in their practices: inverted papilloma and osteomas/fibro-osseous lesions.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Recognize when a patient is presenting with either inverted papilloma or an osteoma/fibro-osseous lesion.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Understand the appropriate steps and workup for these tumors prior to surgical resection, as well as whether or not surgical resection is always the correct management strategy.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Implement the best surgical techniques to resect these tumors and understand best post-operative practice.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Otolaryngologists may not have significant exposure to sinus tumors in their training, and yet will definitely see at least the top two most common types present in their practices. There is a need to educate on appropriate diagnosis and best-practice management for these tumors.
