PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Effective leadership is critical in organized medicine, but is rarely part of any formal training curriculum in residency or fellowship training or during the early career period. Many physicians find themselves thrust into leadership positions without formal training, yet are supremely motivated to help lead their organization effectively. This panel is comprised of four academic faculty members who have recently ascended into larger leadership roles. With their recent experience, the panelists have identified reasons that they pursued these positions despite the many challenges, common mistakes that they have made, and share advice for future leaders on how to best prepare for leadership opportunities when they arise.

Learning Objectives:

To identify key reasons that physicians should seek leadership opportunities, and how to recognize potential leadership opportunities that are right for them and their skill set.
To identify common mistakes that new leaders can make, including navigating internal vs. external successions, faculty recruitment, human resource issues, and others.
To delineate important strategies that can help prepare a future leader for when the right opportunity arises.
