Frontal Sinus Surgery: Basic and Advanced Technique

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Frontal sinus disease has remained a challenge to treat for general otolaryngologists and for fellowship trained rhinologists. The surgical anatomy is difficult in primary sinus surgery, but even more so, in revision surgery. However, many of the surgeries done to treat the frontal sinus have been in a revision setting. Important structures surrounding the sinus i.e. skull base, orbit, anterior ethmoid artery are also cause for some increased stress when operating. This course will discuss the important sinus anatomy, including revision sinus surgery anatomy, treatment algorithms including medical and surgical options, and multiple video clips will be shown to enhance the presentation. Finally, we will show and discuss advanced surgical technique including Draf I through Draf III surgery.
This course will use lecture slides to teach primary and revision frontal sinus anatomy. It will also use step -by- step video demonstrations to demonstrate basic and advanced frontal sinus surgical technique. Finally, we will have a discussion of the latest medical and surgical treatment options for various pathologies that are found in frontal sinus disease.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Upon completion of this course, participants should be comfortable in navigating the complex surgical anatomy of the frontal sinus in primary and revision surgery.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Participants will learn frontal sinus surgical techniques from Draf I to Draf III with the aid of lecture and video.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Participants will learn the indications for extended frontal sinus procedures

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: With the increase use of technology, the incidence of frontal sinus surgery has been increasing over the past decade. However, we teach the anatomy in primary and revision surgery so that the surgeon does not have to depend on the navigation technology.
