Coaching Yourself: Practical Tools for Tackling Workplace Challenges

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Participants will immerse themselves in an interactive learning experience that simulates real-world coaching scenarios. Through live demonstrations by certified and experienced coaches, participants will observe coaching in action, including modeling the “observer role,” a key component in building reflective skills. Facilitators will use audience engagement to highlight and reinforce essential coaching techniques such as the ”GROW” model which stands for Goal, Reality, Options and Will.

In small breakout groups, participants will step into a coaching simulation, practicing a coaching mindset with a relatable work concern (e.g. performance reviews, negotiation, challenging patient encounters). Each participant will rotate through roles as a coach, coachee, and observer, providing and receiving targeted feedback at each step. Facilitators will circulate, offering real-time insights into powerful questioning techniques and emphasizing “aha” moments to deepen understanding.

This hands-on, simulation-based approach ensures participants leave equipped with practical self-coaching skills and the confidence to apply them in their professional and personal lives. A resource handout, complete with books, programs, and actionable tips, will help participants integrate these techniques into their practice for long-term success.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: AAO-HNS members may view coaching as remediation or prohibitively expensive. We will define coaching, teach self-coaching skills and apply these skills to work challenges. A 2023 systematic review demonstrated physician coaching improved well-being and reduced distress and burnout.1
