PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Eosinophilic esophagitis, gastrointestinal reflux, dysmotility and other gastrointestinal (GI) disorders have extra-esophageal manifestations that mimic or exacerbated common otolaryngologic disorders. Otolaryngologic manifestations of GI disorders include rhinitis, sinusitis, globus, dysphonia, dysphagia, stridor, and lower airway infections. Improper or delayed recognition and treatment can result in disease progression, post operative complications and patient dissatisfaction. Recognizing, differentiating and treating these disorders appropriately and in a timely manner is important for both pediatric and general otolaryngologists as well as laryngologists. This panel combines gastroenterologists specializing in dysmotility, eosinophilic esophagitis and gastrointestinal reflux and pediatric otolaryngologists specializing in aerodigestive disorders. We will review presenting signs and symptoms as well as discuss work up to aid in differentiating etiologies. Lastly, we will discuss treatment options.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Several GI disorders have extra-esophageal manifestations that mimic or exacerbated otolaryngologic disorders. Recognizing and treating these appropriately is important for otolaryngologists to prevent disease progression, post operative complications and patient dissatisfaction.

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : Although none of the panelists are currently practicing comprehensive otolaryngologists, the moderator previously was for 3 years prior to specializing in pediatric otolaryngology. Moreover, gastrointestinal disorders present with symptoms that span the breadth of otolaryngology.
