(A214) Demography and Socioeconomic Factors in Patients with Deep Neck Space Infections of Odontogenic Origin

Introduction: To analyse demographic and socioeconomic factors related to DNSI.

Methods: All patients treated in-hospital care with DNSI, 2019, in the second largest health care region in Sweden. Age, sex, educational level, foreign born, socioeconomic status, residency (city-rural) co-morbidities and individual cost per patient (CPP) was analysed.

Results: : 148 patients with DNSI, aged 18-89 years (mean age 51.1 years, 53.4% women). The ages 18-29, 40-49, and 60-69 stand out among the women, 30-39, and 50-59, among the men. Compared to national data, around 22% of the study population were low educated vs 10%, and 25% were foreign born vs 20%. Low economic standard was 15 % higher. More men had low economic standard. Mean CPP was higher in patients with the lowest economic standard and the lowest educational level. Residential area was comparable to the general VGR population. The most common co-morbidities were Diseases of the circulatory system 9%, Diseases of the blood and blood-forming organs and certain disorders involving the immune mechanism 8%, Diseases of the nervous system 7% and Diseases of the digestive system, Diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue 6%.

Conclusions: Low eduction and low economic standard was associated with DNSI and related to higher cost. There was age groups associated with DNSI related to sex. Vigilance for dental infections that could develop into a DNSI should be advocated in these patient groups.
