(A1136) The 10-Year Prevalence and Risk of Asthma Among Patients with Chronic Gingivitis

Introduction: Chronic poor oral hygiene, which can eventually lead to chronic gingivitis, has been associated with systemic medical conditions that involve the airway, including asthma. We aim to analyze the risk of developing asthma among patients with chronic gingivitis and its prevalence in populations, ethnicities and across sexes in the last 10 years.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study utilizing de-identified patient data from the TriNetX platform, a comprehensive electronic health records system consisting of 143 healthcare systems and more than 163 million patients' clinical records from 18 participating countries. 10-year prevalence of asthma and the associated risk among patients with chronic gingivitis based on ethnic/racial groups and gender were assessed. For risk assessment, propensity score matching was employed to balance baseline characteristics, including age, sex, ethnicity, and comorbidities of obesity, allergy, smoking, and history of asthma, between cohorts.

Results: Risk of developing asthma among patients with chronic gingivitis was 3.142% when compared to healthy subjects (p value < 0.001). The 10-year prevalence of asthma among patients with chronic gingivitis was 13.678%, N=70,277 cases, of which 42,004 cases were female vs. 27,389 males and 884 cases identified as other genders.

Conclusions: Our findings further suggest a potential link between new onset of asthma among non-obese, non-smoker adolescents with a preceding history of chronic gingivitis. Further research is required to better understand the involvement of oral microbiome in inflammatory respiratory diseases with an emphasis on possible genetic and environmental predispositions to asthma, given that only 13.7% of the patients with chronic gingivitis developed asthma.
