Director: Pediatric Otolaryngology
Allegheny Health Network
Pittsburgh, PA, United States
Dr. Farrel J. Buchinsky, Director of Pediatric Otolaryngology at Allegheny Health Network in Pittsburgh, was born, raised, and educated in South Africa, completing his MBChB and BSc(Med)(Hons) degrees there. He subsequently undertook his medical training in the United States, specifically in Philadelphia and Seattle. He finds immense satisfaction in helping parents, noting that "the most amazing thing I have learned is how much one can help parents if you sit down, listen to the history about the child and think things through."
As a scientist, Dr. Buchinsky's work focuses on modeling the risk and clinical course of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP). He was the principal investigator of a 12-year, NIH-funded study that collected host DNA from 611 individuals with RRP and their parents, as well as fresh papilloma samples from about half of the affected subjects. This extensive research earned him the Harris P. Mosher award for excellence in clinical research from the Triological Society for his thesis, "HPV11 and Young Age at Diagnosis are Independently Associated with Pulmonary Involvement in Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis." Dr. Buchinsky has also been honored for his contributions to the Chatham College Physician Assistant Class in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
