Melissa Pynnonen, MD, MSc, MOD is a Professor of Otolaryngology and Chief of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at the University of Michigan. A physician leader and executive coach, she is also the founder of Athena Leadership Consulting, where she helps healthcare executives and teams strengthen communication, navigate conflict, and foster resilient, high-performing cultures.
Dr. Pynnonen earned her medical degree and Master of Health Care Research from the University of Michigan and is completed a Master of Organization Development at Bowling Green State University. She previously served as Medical Director of the University of Michigan West Ann Arbor Health Center, where she led the clinic through the COVID-19 pandemic—establishing the first ambulatory care triage site and consolidating 12 clinics into a single location while maintaining zero workplace-acquired infections. That experience deepened her belief in the power of compassion, humility, and authentic leadership during crisis.A lifelong learner and dedicated mentor and coach, Dr. Pynnonen draws on her personal journey and coaching experience to serve as a powerful thinking partner for leaders striving to reach their highest potential.
