Amber Shaffer, PhD, CCRP, is a Research Assistant Professor in Pediatric Otolaryngology at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. She received a BS in microbiology with a minor in psychology from the University of Oklahoma and a PhD in psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her doctoral research addressed the role of the opioid system in persistent bladder pain following neonatal bladder inflammation. She went on to complete postdoctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh, during which her research focused on the role of the immune system in inflammatory bladder pain. In her present role as Research Assistant Professor she supports clinical research throughout the division and leads studies examining otologic outcomes in children with cleft palate and interactions with the middle ear and nasopharyngeal microbiome.
