Dr. Joseph Kerschner became the Dean of the School of Medicine and Executive Vice President of the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) in November 2011. He served in this role until January of 2025. His leadership saw MCW's physician practice more than triple and NIH funding for the medical school double. He has held numerous leadership roles in organized medicine including serving as Chair of the Council of Deans for the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and Chair of the Board of Directors for the AAMC. Dr. Kerschner maintains an active membership on numerous professional and honorary societies, is Past President of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology.
As Dean of the School of Medicine, Dr. Kerschner championed health equity, forming the Institute for Health and Equity and the Center for the Advancement of Population Science. He supported women's leadership and advancement forming the Center for the Advancement of Women in Science and Medicine (AWSM) and led priorities around salary equity. He was deeply commited to community and helped lead MCW attain Carnegie Community Engagment Designation. Educational achievements included the creation of two regional campuses for MCW and formation of the Provost's Office as MCW evolved into a health sicence university.
Dr. Kerschner maintains an active research laboratory which has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health since 2001. He has published ground-breaking basic and clinical research in otitis media. Dr. Kerschner has published over 170 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He provides editorial expertise for the leading journals in otolaryngology and is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pediatric Otorhinolaryngology.
Currently, Dr. Kerschner is a Senior Partner at Chartis Consulting, a Senior Scholar at the New York Academy of Medicine, and has co-founded two research start-up companies based on his research successes over the decades.
