Trevor Hackman, MD FACS, Distinguished Professor and Vice Chair of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery, University of North Carolina Department of Otolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery. As a head and neck/microvascular surgeon, I also direct the UNC Head and Neck/Microvascular Fellowship and the UNC Multidisciplinary Tumor Board and current director of head and neck clinical research. My practice is focused on head and neck oncology, including transoral resection of upper aerodigestive tract malignancies, treatment of salivary gland malignancies and reconstructive techniques. I also have a clinical interest in the role of induction therapy (both chemotherapy and immunotherapy) prior to surgery for the management of upper aerodigestive tract squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA). My clinical research interests include: 1) investigation of the genomic pathways that influence cancer metastasis, treatment toxicities, treatment response, and prognosis 2) investigation of the potential prognostic genomic disparities amongst patients with Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) positive and negative oropharynx cancer 3) translation research on the impact of induction chemotherapy prior to surgery for SCCA of the upper aerodigestive tract, and 4) the genomic predictors of oral cavity cancer depth of invasion (DOI) and spread. In addition, I have a passion for quality improvement efforts. I currently lead projects on 1) Opioid stewardship in my department to create protocols for reducing opioid usage, 2) Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) for surgical populations to improve patient outcomes, 3) Institutional efforts to reduce length of stay, readmission rates, patient outcomes, including reducing patient morbidity and mortality, 4) standardization and optimization of pre-anesthesia testing for patients system wide. I lead multiple institutional efforts in regards to patient safety and quality improvement as well as mentor students and resident in quality improvement research.
