Dr. Angela Powell entered active duty service for the US Navy in 2006 following completion of residency training in Otolaryngology at the University of Pittsburgh. While stationed at Naval Medical Center San Diego, LCDR Powell took an active role in resident education and was the recipient of the 2007 Resident Teacher of the Year Award. She was Co-Director of the first-ever, tri-service Endoscopic Sinus Surgery course offering in collaboration with UCSD in 2009 and received the Program Director’s Award for outstanding contributions to the residency program. She spent a six-month temporary assignment at the NH Pensacola in 2011 where she was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. Upon transfer to NH Jacksonville (NHJAX), she served on the Medical Executive Committee chairing the Medical Records Committee and the Professional Practice Evaluation Committee. She was nominated for the Military Health System Female Physician Leader of the Year Award twice and ranked as a top 5 Navy finalist while completing all training requirements to achieve the Executive Medicine Advanced Qualification Designator and promoting to the rank of Commander. She was awarded a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal prior to her transfer to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in 2017. She transitioned to the USN reserves in 2019 receiving a Joint Service Commendation Medal from WRNMMC at the completion of her tour. She served as the first African American to Chair the Women in Otolaryngology Section of the AAO-HNS from 2019-2020 and her tenure as President of the Harry Barnes Medical Society ended in July 2022. She transitioned from active duty to civilian practice in 2019 as an employed physician with the Guthrie Medical Group until leaving this position in 2022 to open her own solo private practice as founder and owner of Plattsburgh ENT in Plattsburgh, NY.
