Acoustic Vibrational Therapy for the Treatment of Pediatric Rhinitis

Introduction: Nasal congestion associated with chronic rhinitis is a common condition impacting quality of life. Acoustic resonance therapy (ART), in which individually calibrated acoustic vibratory energy is delivered to the sinonasal cavities to reduce symptoms, has been shown to be safe and efficacious in adults with allergic and/or non-allergic rhinitis. This study evaluates safety and efficacy in pediatric patients.

Methods: This was a prospective, non-randomized, single-center cohort study of patients aged 12-21, with a total nasal symptom score (TNSS) nasal subs-core of ≥2. Patients were subdivided into age groups 12-15 (Group A) and 16-21 (Group B). Subjects enrolled from January to March 2025. Intervention was performed at home twice daily. The primary outcome was nasal congestion score at baseline compared with an average of the score obtained following the first daily intervention over 2 weeks.

Results: 15 patients enrolled in Group A and 16 in Group B. Across both groups in aggregate, nasal congestion sub-score changed by -0.76 (95% CI [-0.97, -0.54], p< 0.0001) for an average reduction of 35.2%, while TNSS changed by -2.74 (95% CI [-3.41, -2.06], p< 0.0001) for an average reduction of 40.5%. Significant improvement was noted in both individual age groups. All TNSS sub-components demonstrated statistically significant improvements compared with their respective baseline.

Conclusions: Symptom improvement in pediatric patients using ART for treatment of chronic rhinitis is similar to that previously reported in adults, and is comparable to the improvement reported in trials using intranasal corticosteroids. This intervention may be a viable non-pharmacologic option for treatment of pediatric chronic rhinitis.
