Vestibular Migraine for the Comprehensive Otolaryngologist

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Vestibular migraine is a common yet complex diagnosis encountered by comprehensive otolaryngologists and otologists/neurotologists alike. Treatment strategies include lifestyle changes, therapy, and prescription medications and combinations thereof. Comorbidities must be identified and addressed for optimal patient outcomes. In this panel, we will cover the diagnosis of vestibular migraine, comorbid and differential diagnostic considerations, and the full breadth of available options for treatment.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Identify the diagnostic criteria for vestibular migraine and the limitations of current consensus criteria.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Discuss comorbid conditions, including Meniere’s disease and persistent postural perceptual dizziness.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Describe pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment as well as the importance of treating comorbidities (sleep apnea, anxiety).

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Vestibular migraine and its symptoms are encountered commonly by comprehensive and specialty otolaryngologists. Otolaryngologists will benefit from a panel discussing the diagnostic criteria and treatment options for these challenging patients.
