Navigating Sphenoid Sinus Lesions: Balancing Decision Factors and Treatment Approaches

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The diagnosis and management of sphenoid sinus lesions are currently a subject of controversy. Unlike the frontal, ethmoid, and maxillary sinuses, sphenoid sinus disease often presents with either no symptoms or intermittent, non-specific symptoms, occasionally leading to vertex headaches.

At present, there is a lack of established diagnostic and treatment algorithms for sphenoid sinus lesions. This session will place a particular emphasis on the diagnosis and management of benign lesions in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients. The panel will engage in discussions regarding the management of asymptomatic lesions, such as fungus balls in the sphenoid, in both young and older patients, and explore the decision-making process between monitoring and surgical intervention.

Additionally, the panel will delve into surgical approaches for various pathologies, including fungal sinusitis, inverted papillomas, fibro-osseous lesions, and other benign/malignant conditions. The discussions will also extend to addressing CSF leaks located in the sphenoid sinus.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to recognize the various clinical presentations, signs and symptoms of sphenoid sinus lesions.
  2. Participants will be able to formulate a differential diagnosis of sphenoid sinus lesions.
  3. Participants will gain the ability to identify potential options for the medical and surgical management of sphenoid sinus lesions, while actively involving patients in shared decision-making.
