Vestibular Testing: What's Warranted, What's Wasteful 2025

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The growing array of available vestibular tests presents new possibilities for measuring the function of the vestibular system. However, it also invites debate and confusion as clinicians determine how best to utilize these tools to evaluate patients with dizziness. In this case-based panel presentation, sponsored by the Equilibrium committee, panelists will present a range of common clinical scenarios and will discuss how they
would approach the evaluation, including which vestibular tests they would obtain (if any), how they would interpret them, and, most importantly, how having the results would change their management. Testing modalities discussed will include videonystagmography, rotary chair, video head impulse testing, and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials. The goal of this presentation is to equip clinicians to make wise choices about the use and interpretation of vestibular testing when caring for dizzy patients.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Evaluate the benefits and limitations of the diverse array of vestibular tests available.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Determine what is a reasonable vestibular test battery for common clinical scenarios.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Interpret patterns in vestibular test results that drive patient management decisions.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Our presentation was very well received in 2024. However, due to the fire alarm, half the audience left to go to their hotels. The Equilibrium Committee decided that vestibular testing is an important enough topic to present again in 2025 hopefully without interruption.
