State of the Union: Investigating National Sponsorship by Gender in Otolaryngology

Introduction: Academic meetings provide opportunities for collaboration and career advancement in the national spotlight. We sought to explore sponsorship opportunities defined by committee leadership, keynote speakership, and panelist-moderator ratios from prior American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) conferences.

Methods: Gender breakdowns of committee leadership and keynote speakerships were recorded from official AAO-HNS conference programming from 2013-2021. Panelist-moderator gender ratios were calculated for the AAO-HNS conferences from 2023-2024.

Results: Between 2013-2021, women comprised on average 29.6% of directorship roles (range 12.5-37.55), 35.6% of board member positions (26.3%-47.4%), and 25.2% of keynote speaker appointments (0%-40%) within AAO-HNS at national conferences. At recent AAO-HNS meetings, women moderated 126 of 278 panels (45.3%) in 2023, and 93 of 249 panels (37.3%) in 2024. In 2023, women comprised 160 of 378 total panel seats in female-moderated panels (42.3%), versus 157 of 427 total panel seats in male-moderated panels (36.7%). In 2024, women comprised 135 of 277 total panel seats in female-moderated panels (48.7%), versus 173 of 441 total panelists spots in male-moderated panels (39.2%). The average female:total panelist ratio was 1.25:2.95 for female-moderated panels versus 1.07:2.91 for male-moderated panels in 2023 (P=0.05), and 1.47:2.98 for female-moderated panels versus 1.16:2.96 for male-moderated panels in 2024 (P < 0.05).

Conclusions: Female representation in AAO-HNS leadership and keynote speakerships appear on par with the proportion of female otolaryngologists in practice. However, male moderators presenting panels had significantly fewer female panelists versus female moderators. This difference in national panel participation opportunities may impact career advancement and national reputation for female otolaryngologists.
