Chronic Cough for Comprehensive Otolaryngologists: Beyond Asthma, Allergies and Acid Reflux

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Cough is consistently the most common patient-reported ambulatory chief complaint in the United States. Yearly, over 21 million annual ambulatory visits are for cough, and thankfully, many of these cases do not persist beyond 8 weeks. However, for patients with persistent symptoms, chronic cough can be challenging. For the comprehensive otolaryngologist, determining the cause of the cough and proper management can be complex and time-consuming. As chronic cough is often multifactorial and multisystem, a systematic history and a management algorithm can streamline these often lengthy patient visits. Tailored to the comprehensive otolaryngologist, this Expert Lecture will discuss strategies to efficiently evaluate and manage chronic cough with emphasis on history taking, examination, communication with consultants, and management algorithms. The treatment for chronic cough beyond asthma, allergies, and acid reflux will be reviewed. Specifically, neuromodulating agents, cough suppression therapy, injection augmentation, and superior laryngeal nerve blocks will be covered.
