HPV: Is It in Your DNA?

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The association of HPV with oropharyngeal cancers is now common knowledge. As a sexually transmitted infection, HPV-associated tumors naturally result in interesting and difficult patient-provider conversations. Through this panel, we will address helpful ways to approach these discussions, as well as address common dilemmas and questions regarding HPV vaccination. Additionally, there is emerging evidence that circulating HPV DNA (HPV ctDNA) can be identified with a simple blood test and is an extremely useful adjunctive surveillance test. We will present the evidence in using ctDNA as a surveillance measure, a potential diagnostic measure, and provide interesting and clinically relevant cases in which HPV ctDNA results can be helpful in managing these patients. Through this case-based panel discussion, providers will be armed with all they need to approach HPV-associated oropharyngeal tumors with the most up-to-date and relevant medical knowledge.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Interpret the evidence on HPV testing at diagnosis and in follow up for neck masses, unknown primary cancers, and non-oropharyngeal head and neck cancers including the use of circulating tumor DNA testing.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Demonstrate clinician communication with patients (and families) regarding the diagnosis of an HPV-associated malignancy.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Recognize the effectiveness of HPV-vaccination and review impact of vaccination on sexual behavior in teens.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: There is strong evidence for the use of HPV circulating DNA during routine surveillance. Discussion will include how to interpret ctDNA results in real patient scenarios. Guidance on how to approach "uncomfortable" discussions regarding sexual behavior and vaccination will also be provided.

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : HPV has long been known to cause cervical cancer, but now HPV more commonly causes oropharyngeal cancer. Our panel will arm clinicians with all they need to know about HPV-transmission and tumorigenesis, vaccination, and provide higher level information regarding ctDNA testing.
