Botulinum Toxin Use in the Salivary Glands: Indications, Interesting cases, and Complications

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Botulinum toxin is used in the treatment of multiple salivary gland pathologies to limit flow of saliva, thereby quieting the gland. Indications include sialadenitis without sialolithiasis, salivary gland trauma, post-operative complications, and pathologic sialorrhea in adults and children. Literature varies with regard to timing of botulinum toxin injections, method of injection or administration, and the dosing of botulinum toxin. A prior academy panel focused on these aspects of injection, in this panel we will again review these concepts, but will expand upon the complications associated with bolutinum toxin injections into the salivary glands.
This panel of experts will describe their indications and techniques for using botulinum toxin in the salivary glands and review complications from the injections as well as management techniques for the complications. This presentation will utilize a case-based approach to address the benefits of botulinum toxin injections as well as the associated risks.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Provide understanding of the indications for botulinum toxin use in the salivary glands.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Provide understanding of complications following salivary botulinum toxin injections.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Provide understanding of the management of complications following botulinum toxin injections.

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Among the subset of Otolaryngologists treating salivary gland disorders, the majority have focused on medical and surgical treatments. This presentation offers valuable perspective on the risks and benefits of salivary gland botulinum toxin injections.

Comprehensive Otolaryngology Track Statement : The goal of this panel is to improve familiarity with the risks and benefits of botulinum toxin so that all otolaryngologists can offer this treatment option to their patients with salivary gland disorders.
