PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Vocal fold injection has been a mainstay of Otolaryngology treatment dating back to Breunings in the early 1900s. Following a period of restraint in the wake of problems with Teflon injection material, injection augmentation is again enjoying increased use and wider applicability because of (1) new materials, (2) new injection approaches, (3) improved visualization of the larynx and (4) enhanced understanding of laryngeal physiology. These aspects make vocal fold injection a very dynamic, important clinical care tool and exciting topic all Otolaryngologists.

This expert series provides a detailed review of type of vocal fold injection, indications, injection materials and indications for vocal fold injection especially as it related to laryngeal framework surgery.

Factors favoring awake injection (sometimes referred to as “office” injection) or vocal fold injection via microlaryngoscopy will be contrasted and outlined in detail.

Patient selection as it relates to indication for injection, material selection and injection approach will be highlighted in both a didactic format and case-based manner. Special emphasis will be placed on patient with (1) Unilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis and (2) Vocal Fold Atrophy. In addition, the concept and implementation of “trial vocal fold injection” will be discussed in detail.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the appropriate decisions regarding the selection of different vocal fold injection materials.
  2. The key surgical aspects of vocal fold injection via microlaryngoscopy will be presented.
  3. Understanding the decision-making process for potential vocal fold injection patients, especially unilateral vocal fold paralysis and paresis.
