The Orbit for Comprehensive Otolaryngologists

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This presentation consists of an overview of the anatomy, pathophysiology, and clinical management of orbital conditions, tailored specifically for comprehensive otolaryngologists. While the orbit is often considered the domain of our ophthalmologist colleagues, a thorough understanding of orbital disorders is crucial for otolaryngologists who encounter patients with symptoms that involve the orbit, eye, and adnexa.
We will begin with a comprehensive review of orbital anatomy, highlighting the key structures relevant to otolaryngologists: the bony orbit, orbital contents, and the vascular and nervous attachments. The importance of the periorbital region in otolaryngology practice will also be emphasized. including the relationships with adjacent structures such as the paranasal sinuses and the nasolacrimal system.
The session will also cover common orbital pathologies seen in comprehensive otolaryngology practice, including orbital cellulitis, tumors (benign and malignant), thyroid eye disease, sinus pathology and orbital fractures. Special attention is given to the recognition of signs and symptoms that may indicate urgent conditions requiring immediate referral or intervention, such as optic nerve compression, orbital abscesses, and the sequelae of facial trauma.
Key diagnostic methods, including imaging modalities (CT, MRI), are reviewed to equip physicians with the skills needed to properly evaluate orbital conditions. The lecture will also discuss non-surgical and surgical interventions for presented pathologies.
Upon completion of this presentation, comprehensive otolaryngologists will have a good understanding of orbital anatomy, pathology, radiology, surgical and non-surgical interventions
