Odontogenic Sinusitis: Teeth and Sinuses Matter

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is distinct from non-odontogenic rhinosinusitis, and is more common than historically thought. Recent studies suggest it may represent up to 25-40% of all chronic maxillary sinusitis, and 45-75% of all unilateral sinusitis. However, there has been significant underrepresentation of ODS in the sinusitis literature, representing about 1% of sinusitis publications over the last 20 years. Additionally, diagnosis and treatment of ODS have not been formally discussed in even the most recent national and international sinusitis guidelines or position statements. ODS can be mistaken for various forms of non-odontogenic sinonasal disease, and is commonly missed by various dental and medical providers. It is therefore critical that otolaryngologists understand how to recognize, diagnose, and treat patients with ODS.

Over the last 6 years, numerous studies have been published across various aspects of ODS, including epidemiology, microbiology, diagnosis, and treatment. Also important, evidence levels of these recent ODS studies have improved compared to prior ODS literature. Two multidisciplinary national and international consensus statements have also been published on diagnosing and treating ODS. This lecture will provide an evidence-based approach for diagnosing and treating ODS, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing ODS from other forms of sinus disease, as well as collaborating with dental specialists to optimize management.
