The Larynx Doesn’t Look Quite Right … What Next? Autoimmune, Granulomatous and Infiltrative Laryngeal Disease

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: A vast number of infectious and non-malignant diseases can affect the larynx. While “benign” in nature, they can result in substantial impairments of laryngeal biomechanics and function, oftentimes permanent. These often present to the otolaryngologist with symptoms and complaints of voice change, altered swallow, and breathing difficulties.

Panelists will reference and review the available literature surrounding non-malignant infectious, inflammatory, infiltrative and neoplastic disease to meet the session objectives. We present a series of case examples with an expert panel of non-malignant diseases of the larynx that often present with unusual appearances and debilitating symptoms. Questions from the audience will be encouraged, and active participation promoted using real-time live pole questions. Topics to be covered include diagnostic work-up and imaging techniques for atypical laryngeal appearing diseases; biopsy techniques and considerations; appropriate consultations to obtain and management options to both treat disease and rehabilitate/maintain laryngeal function with respect to voice, swallow and maintenance of airway patency.

By the end of the workshop, participants will gain increased awareness and confidence with their work-up and decision making managing non-malignant infiltrative laryngeal disease.

Learning Objectives:

  1. After actively participating in the workshop, participants will be able to list a differential diagnosis of potential non-malignant diseases causing laryngeal dysfunction.
  2. Participants will appreciate the role and considerations for laryngeal biopsy and select a surgical technique that appropriately balances diagnostic and therapeutic goals, while optimizing preservation of laryngeal function.
  3. Interpret the various pathologic diagnoses, appreciate the dilemmas and limitations associated with pathologic diagnosis considering the specimen sampled, and counsel patients on biopsy results and suggest reasonable treatment options.
