PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) also known as modified barium swallow study (MBSS) are safe, validated, and widely used instrumental diagnostic procedure for evaluation of oropharyngeal swallowing function in adults and children, as well as for offering oral diets recommendations, and for implementation of appropriate rehabilitation interventions. FEES and MBSS/VFSS are considered the gold standard for oropharyngeal swallowing evaluation and are most commonly performed by speech language pathologists (SLPs). However, these studies are gaining more popularity among Otolaryngologists. In this session we will present the use of FEES and MBSS in ENT outpatient clinic. We will present the literature, guidelines, billing options and role of SLP with performing these studies in outpatient ENT clinic.

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: 1. Identify and differentiate between oropharyngeal and esophageal diagnostic workup

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: 2. Explain and compare between oropharyngeal instrumental studies: Flexible endoscopic
evaluation of swallowing (FEES) and videofluoroscopic swallowing study (VFSS) also known as
modified barium swallow study (MBSS)

OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: 3. Explain how to implement FEES in your ENT practice (SLP, billing, etc)
4. Explain how to implement MBSS/VFSS in your ENT practice (SLP, billing, etc)

BACKGROUND STATEMENT: Session will provide general approach to the assessment of dysphagia in the ENT clinic. We will present the use and implementation of instrumental swallowing evaluation (FEES and MBSS) in ENT clinic. We will provide the basic of how to build MBSS/FEES service in your practice and what is needed.
