PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Hearing loss is one of the most common conditions encountered by the practicing otolaryngologist. While treatment, to date, has been mainly supportive (via hearing aids) or rehabilitative (via cochlear implants) a promise for novel therapeutics seems to be now closer than ever. This expert series is designed to review the present knowledge and state of the art research in Otology and Neurotology. We focus our lectures on advances in (a) genetics of hearing loss, gene delivery and gene therapy; (b) approaches for hearing preservatıon and restoration including pharmaceutical interventions; and (c) new fronts and understandings of ınner ear trauma and its treatments. The program does not require prior knowledge in basic science research and is designed to offer providers with sufficient knowledge to understand the current state of research, appreciate translational research on the topic, and engage in conversation with their patients about the future of therapeutics.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Update on ongoing clinical trials related to new otoprotective drugs - Update provides on state-of-the-art research relevant to their medical practice.
  2. Understand the current status genetics of hearing loss. - Understand where gene delivery techniques stand, promise and perils.
  3. Dıscuss the apoptosis and necrosis of sensory cells post ınner trauma - Explain the current status of hearing restoration research and path for therapeutics. - Empower providers to better engage with translational literature in medical journals.
