Pediatric Laryngoscopes and Bronchoscopes: Names, Indications and Pearls for Pediatric Laryngoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Foreign Body Removal

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The range of pediatric airway endoscopy equipment available to providers is vast, and understanding the essential tools needed for one’s institution can be overwhelming. This course is designed for residents and fellows training in pediatric airway procedures, as well as otolaryngologists who perform pediatric cases infrequently and could benefit from a refresher on equipment and techniques.

Throughout the course, we will cover the key features, applications, and indications of the most commonly used pediatric airway instruments, including laryngoscopes, bronchoscopes, and foreign body removal devices. A hands-on session at the end of the course will give attendees the opportunity to examine and handle equipment such as the Lindholm, Benjamin, Parsons, Holinger-Tucker, Weerda, Kleinsasser, Dedo, and Jako laryngoscopes, as well as various bronchoscopes and their components.

We will also briefly review the history and evolution of laryngoscope development, highlighting the important techniques and best practices that can enhance safety and efficiency in pediatric airway endoscopy. Given the wide variety of pediatric bronchoscopes, we will discuss the critical sizes needed at an institution and how to choose the appropriate scope for different situations.

In addition, participants will gain hands-on experience with optical foreign body forceps, and we will review key considerations for size and safe retrieval both preoperatively and intra-operatively.

This course is offered annually as part of our national airway endoscopy program and is consistently rated as a valuable, informative, and interactive learning experience. Much of the equipment demonstrated is manufactured by Karl Storz Endoscopy.
